    '04 Silverado Reboot

I had a battery die on a dark and rainy night. It went from normal start to completely discharged at one stop. I got a jump and started the truck, drove it 2 hours home and shut it down. The battery didn't have enough juice to bring up the light. Next morning I pulled the battery and tired to quick charge it and it wouldn't take a charge. I bought a new battery, installed it and the truck started as expected. However, it idled rough and would die when the accelerator was left at idle. Idle speeds fluxuated between 500-1200 rpm. I continued driving it because it restarted imediately after each stall. After driving it 30 minutes it seemed to run fine and had corrected itself.

Does the current generation of engine control modules need to learn if they are disconnected from power? Is there a breakin routine? If not should I be looking for something else electrical?

I replaced the battery in my '03 down in Slade last November. After installing it I fired it up and let it run for 5 minutes, then it sat for two days and the next time it ran was pulling a loaded trailer. There were no noticable performance changes. Normally you shouldn't notice any difference after a battery change besides resetting the clock and radio stations, but I'm not that surprised. Assuming there are no further issues I wouldn't worry about it.

Roger the normally no noticeable problems. I was thinking on it and convinced myself that this is the first time (for me) that I had a vehicle using modern computer controls that had sat powered down that long. I have usually had batteries show signs of failure and I had replaced them before total prolonged failures. LOL... and I drive older vehicles too where the most complicated electronics are the radios.

    Thanks Brad.

You will often get the screwy idle when you disconnect the battery on newer GM trucks and vans. It's a simple fix though, just turn the ignition on and off a few times (without starting) in a row, then start the truck. It will idle fine then.
